Retrofit of seriously damaged ferry “Pride of Telemark” in Denmark

Project:Retrofit of seriously damaged ferry “Pride of Telemark” in Denmark

The “Pride of Telemark” ferry (built in 1983) carried out scheduled services between Hirtshals, Strømstad and Langesund. In heavy weather on 11 September 2007, the ship struck a pier in the port of Hirtshals, tearing open its hull. Everything below deck three was flooded. The vessel was refitted in Frederikshavn (Denmark) in 2008. Wärtsilä Automation Services (service provider for ship’s engines and electrical & mechanical systems) concluded a contract for the repair of the living quarters, the engines and the electrical systems. The replacement of the electrical system comprised around 80% of the job. This project was successfully completed thanks to TPS sending in over 30 electricians and panel builders for a period of six months.

The following tasks were carried out:
- Dismantling parts of the electrical system, including switchboards and control panels;
- Stripping out all the affected wiring (100 km);
- Rebuilding all minor switchboards, control panels and consoles;
- Replacing and reconnecting all the wiring.

Thanks to the excellent cooperation of the technical staff, the project proved highly successful! The Pride of Telemark ferry was again able to depart from port under its own steam.
